Chemnitz (dpa/sn) - Numerous campaigns will be held in Chemnitz on Sunday to commemorate the bombing of the city 78 years ago and the victims of the Second World War. A commemoration is planned at the municipal cemetery in the morning. Later, athletes want to replicate a peace sign with one run. In the afternoon, readings will also commemorate authors whose works were burned by the National Socialists.

In the evening, the victims of past and present wars will be commemorated on the Neumarkt. According to the city administration, war refugees will talk about their experiences and their desire for peace. In addition, a service entitled "Arming - disarming - converting" is planned in the St. Jakobi church. The day ends at 9 p.m. with the ringing of the Chemnitz church bells.

On March 5, 1945, parts of Chemnitz were destroyed in Allied air raids. According to the city, 2,100 people died in the flames and debris. More than 27,000 homes, many factories, offices and public buildings were destroyed.
