Saxony: After a suspected cyber attack, WLAN again in Freiberg University of Technology

Freiberg (dpa/sn) - After the suspected cyber attack on the IT infrastructure of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg, there is internet access again on campus via a wireless network. The TU Bergakademie announced on Tuesday that around 4,000 students could use the WiFi on campus again. From Tuesday, the university will activate a portal for the assignment of special WLAN passwords for the approximately 2,000 employees. This should protect the access data even better, it said.

According to the TU, there was a cyber attack on the university data center in mid-January, after which computer systems were initially disconnected from the Internet. The exact background is currently still unclear. In this case, cybercrime experts from the State Criminal Police Office are investigating.

According to the university, it will probably take until mid-March for the IT systems to be fully restored. The university's IT services are currently being ramped up "step by step" and made accessible to students and employees. Interested parties can thus apply online for a course of study, and students also have access to online teaching materials again.
