Saxony-Anhalt: Body cameras decided for the police

Magdeburg (dpa/sa) - Police officers in Saxony-Anhalt can be equipped with body cameras in the future. The state parliament decided on Tuesday. The innovation is part of an amendment to the Public Safety and Order Act.

With the video cameras, police officers should be better protected against attacks during operations. In addition, the cameras may provide material to clarify incidents. The bodycam attached to the upper body permanently overwrites the recorded sequences without saving them. Only when the officer activates the video function are sequences retroactive and the subsequent events secured.

In addition, so-called section controls should be possible with the Section Control speed monitoring system. They do not measure the speed of a vehicle at a specific point, but the average speed within a section over several measuring points.

Interior Minister Tamara Zieschang (CDU) said that modern police work requires up-to-date options for action. These instruments are now being given to the state police.
