Saxony-Anhalt: FDP politician speaks out in favor of fracking in the Altmark

Magdeburg (dpa/sa) - FDP state board member Maximilian Gludau has spoken out in favor of natural gas production in Saxony-Anhalt using the controversial fracking process. "If we want to solve the current energy crisis, we have to consider all options," Gludau said on Friday. In addition to hydrogen, renewable energies, nuclear energy and lignite, "domestic shale gas" should also contribute to the energy mix. "Instead of putting up with cold apartments for ideological reasons, we should also consider so-called fracking."

Gludau sees sufficient gas reserves in the Altmark district of Salzwedel. Natural gas from this region was already being used for industrial purposes in GDR times and was being processed in Leuna, Buna and Magdeburg, he said. In fracking, gas or oil is extracted from layers of rock with the help of pressure and chemicals, which poses risks for the environment - for example for drinking water production.

The Federation of German Industries had also campaigned this week for natural gas production in Germany using fracking processes. Economics Minister Robert Habeck (Greens), on the other hand, confirmed the previous course of the federal government with strict rules. In terms of energy policy, funding through fracking in Germany is not necessary in the medium term, according to Habeck. The future lies in hydrogen.
