Saxony-Anhalt: Ministry: 88 percent of property tax returns are there

Magdeburg (dpa/sa) - According to the Ministry of Finance, 88 percent of property tax returns in Saxony-Anhalt were submitted on time. On Tuesday, the last timely submission day, 28,500 declarations were received, a ministry spokeswoman said on Wednesday. There had never been more on any other day. An average of around 10,000 declarations were made every day. Immediately before the deadline, however, the numbers were significantly higher: around 12,000 declarations were submitted on Sunday and as many as 21,000 on Monday.

However, the number of declarations made also increased for another reason: the total number of properties to be valued was corrected downwards. According to the ministry, there are now around 907,000 instead of the previously assumed 1.017 million. The “Mitteldeutsche Zeitung” reported about it online first.

From 2025, a new property tax calculation should take effect. To do this, almost 36 million properties in Germany have to be revalued. This is done on the basis of information that all owners must submit. In mid-October, the federal states had extended the submission deadline from the end of October to the end of January 2023 due to the slow receipt of the new property tax returns from the tax authorities.

Anyone who has not submitted the declaration by the deadline will first receive a reminder from the tax office. In addition, according to the Ministry of Finance, a late fee may be due for late submission. In the event of non-delivery, the tax office can estimate the basis of taxation.
