Saxony-Anhalt: Ministry of the Interior: Tense admission of refugees

Saxony-Anhalt had already expected a higher number of asylum seekers at the beginning of the year. The assumptions have been confirmed.

Magdeburg (dpa/sa) - From the point of view of the Ministry of the Interior, the reception situation for refugees in Saxony-Anhalt is tense. In the past few months, noticeably more people have come, the ministry said on request in Magdeburg. "Proactive planning is made more difficult because the federal government does not provide any reliable access forecasts." The Ministry of the Interior has repeatedly warned and criticized this.

The central contact point in Halberstadt registered around 4,100 new asylum seekers from the beginning of the year to the end of October. War refugees from Ukraine are not included - by the end of October, according to local authorities, there were around 28,600. In the same period last year, 2,225 entries were recorded in the central contact point for asylum seekers in Saxony-Anhalt, and there were 2,995 asylum seekers in the whole of 2021.

Most asylum seekers this year come from Syria, Afghanistan, Georgia, Turkey and Iran. "Since asylum seekers are distributed to the federal states via the nationwide distribution system EASY, the increase in migration movements via the so-called Balkan route is also affecting Saxony-Anhalt," it said.

In the central contact point in Halberstadt, the situation is tense due to the persistently high number of asylum seekers. Hearings were held late at the branch office of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees in Halberstadt. Due to daily new arrivals on the one hand and distribution to rural districts and urban districts on the other hand, there is a high level of fluctuation. In order to relieve the municipalities, additional branch offices have been set up. "Taking into account the needs, it is currently being examined to what extent these can be increased further," the ministry said.

Prepared early and with foresight for an increase in the number of asylum seekers to up to 5,000. The background was the relaxed corona entry restrictions worldwide and the Taliban's takeover of power in Afghanistan. The plan is still valid.
