Saxony-Anhalt: teaching provision falls far short of the target

Magdeburg (dpa/sa) - In Saxony-Anhalt, only about 93.5 percent of the lessons are secured, so failure is inevitable. Education Minister Eva Feußner (CDU) informed the responsible committee of the state parliament about the current development on Thursday, the ministry announced. "It is obvious that the situation in Saxony-Anhalt's schools is and will remain tense due to the nationwide, enormous need for teachers," said the minister.

The average value of the teaching provision is approximately at the previous year's level. "And that's despite the fact that more than 5,500 children are now being taught at Saxony-Anhalt's schools because of the war against Ukraine and other migration movements." Since the start of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine, an additional 190 Ukrainian teachers and 63 teachers for German as a target language have been recruited. Overall, many efforts are being made to attract skilled workers to the schools.

"Some of the measures need time to develop their full effectiveness. Others are already having a short-term effect and help to look ahead positively in these difficult times," explained the Minister of Education.

The declared goal of the black-red-yellow coalition is 103 percent teaching coverage. This would cover downtime due to illness, parental leave or further training.

The currently determined teaching provision varies depending on the type of school. According to the ministry, it is 95 percent at primary schools, almost 98 percent at high schools and 99.5 percent at comprehensive schools. The secondary schools and community schools are in a much worse position at around 88 percent. The ministry gives a value of 92.3 percent for special needs schools.
