Saxony-Anhalt: Thousands of property tax returns are still missing

Magdeburg (dpa/sa) - More than three weeks after the deadline, around 86 percent of the property tax returns due in Saxony-Anhalt have been submitted. This was announced by the Ministry of Finance on request. A total of around 783,000 entries were recorded. This means that around 124,000 declarations are still missing. The deadline for submission was January 31st.

Two weeks ago, the Ministry of Finance reported an entry level of 90 percent. With the current information, the declarations made several times under one file number have now been fully calculated from the absolute input figures for the first time, it was said to justify the difference.

From 2025, a new property tax calculation should take effect. To do this, almost 36 million properties in Germany have to be revalued. This is done on the basis of information that all owners must submit. In mid-October, the federal states had extended the submission deadline from the end of October to the end of January 2023 due to the slow receipt of the declarations by the tax authorities.

The tax offices in Saxony-Anhalt have already received thousands of objections on various aspects. According to the information, as of the beginning of February there were around 8,400 objections to property tax assessments and around 6,000 objections to the determination of the so-called property tax base amount.

Anyone who has not submitted the property tax return by the deadline will first receive a reminder from the tax office. In addition, according to the ministry, a late fee may be due in the event of late delivery. In the event of non-delivery, the tax office can estimate the basis of taxation. "Reminder letters have not yet been sent in Saxony-Anhalt," said a spokesman for the Ministry of Finance. This can be expected in April 2023 at the earliest.
