Saxony-Anhalt: Three quarters of the property tax returns are available

Property owners only have until Tuesday to file their property tax returns. What is the situation in Saxony-Anhalt?

Magdeburg (dpa/sa) - By the end of the submission period, around 763,000 property tax returns had been received by the tax offices in Saxony-Anhalt. This corresponds to around 75 percent of all required declarations, said the state finance ministry on request. About twelve percent (90,000 declarations) were submitted in paper form, the rest electronically.

This means that around 254,000 property tax returns are still missing in the country at the end of the period. An average of around 10,000 declarations have been made every day in the past few days. According to the Ministry of Finance, the daily high was reached on Sunday with around 12,000 deliveries.

From 2025, a new property tax calculation should take effect. To do this, almost 36 million properties in Germany have to be revalued. This is done on the basis of information that all owners must submit. In mid-October, the federal states had extended the submission deadline from the end of October to the end of January 2023 due to the slow receipt of the new property tax returns from the tax authorities. There will be no further extension of the deadline.

The tax authorities have been receiving the data since July 1, 2022. Usually it is about the land and living space, the type of building, the year of construction and the so-called standard land value. The owners have to enter the data in the online portal "Elster" or on a special page of the Federal Ministry of Finance.

Anyone who does not submit the declaration by the deadline will first receive a reminder from the tax office. In addition, according to the Ministry of Finance, a late fee may be due for late submission. In the event of non-delivery, the tax office can estimate the basis of taxation.
