Saxony: CDU wants more camera technology in the fight against crime

Görlitz (dpa/sn) - The CDU district association in Görlitz wants to use more camera technology to fight crime along the border with Poland and the Czech Republic. The district association announced on Sunday that they wanted to submit an application for this at the CDU state party conference on November 5 in Schkeuditz. Since 2019, the Görlitz police department has been using stationary camera technology at a total of six different locations in the historic old town of Görlitz, at the city bridge and in Hagenwerder. The statistics prove the effectiveness. The number of property crimes fell from 3,030 cases in 2019 to 2,024 last year.

CDU District Chief Florian Oest recalled that crime in Saxony had been declining for years. This is the result of good and consistent police work. "However, these figures should not hide the fact that crime in the district of Görlitz, which borders on Poland and the Czech Republic, as well as in other districts with an external border with the Czech Republic, is significantly higher." The camera technology has a deterrent effect and helps uncover criminal offenses. The people in Weißwasser, in Zittau, in Saxon Switzerland, in the Eastern Ore Mountains, Vogtland and in Zwickau should also live more safely. The use of mobile cameras can support stationary ones.
