Saxony: Dispute with Kretschmer: Wanderwitz waives his candidacy

Zwickau (dpa / sn) - The CDU member of the Bundestag Marco Wanderwitz is still in a clinch with the Saxon party and government leader Michael Kretschmer and no longer wants to run for the presidency of his home district association Zwickau. In a letter to the party members, he linked the rejection with criticism of Kretschmer, the "Sächsische Zeitung" reported in its online edition on Tuesday. He no longer wants to serve under this national chairman. Wanderwitz himself did not want to make any further additions on request, but wants to remain loyal to the Union. "But yes, I am and will remain a convinced Christian Democrat."

Until the federal elections in 2021, Wanderwitz was the Federal Government’s Eastern Commissioner and one of the harshest critics of the AfD in his party. To the displeasure of many in the CDU, he accused the East Germans of being "socialized with dictatorships" and not having arrived in democracy because of their voting behavior. Critics of Wanderwitz later blamed him for the loss of votes in the election. He had to give up his post as head of the Saxon CDU regional group in the Bundestag.

According to the report in the "Sächsische Zeitung", Wanderwitz pointed out in his internal letter to the party members that elections are won and lost together. After the 2017 federal election, the Saxon CDU "caught and carried" Kretschmer, who lost his Bundestag mandate at the time. Kretschmer's principle, on the other hand, is the search for scapegoats. Wanderwitz also accused other CDU officials in the letter of a lack of support, especially in the dispute with the AfD, it said.
