Dresden (dpa / sn) - The city of Dresden is flirting with an application for the Federal Garden Show 2033. "There has never been a Federal Garden Show in Saxony," said Mayor Dirk Hilbert (FDP) on Friday. Dresden in particular has a long tradition in horticulture. As a next step, the city council should now decide on the preparation of a feasibility study. It is being discussed that two new green corridors could be developed from the city center to the surrounding area in the course of such a garden show.
The initiative is supported by the Technical University. Like no other city, Dresden has an "exquisite tradition" in plant cultivation and use that stretches back to the time of the electors. And the university has a unique botanical collection that could become part of the show, explained Rector Ursula Staudinger. The show could show how gardens and city green can be designed today to be adapted to climate change, insect-friendly and sustainable, added the head of the Institute for Landscape Architecture, Catrin Schmidt.
The German Federal Garden Show Society wants to give the state capital until the end of next year for the feasibility study and decisions. "From our point of view, the city of Dresden has a lot of potential for an integrated urban development process with the proven format of a federal garden show," explained Managing Director Jochen Sandner.
Most recently, Erfurt hosted the Federal Horticultural Show in 2021, and it will open in Mannheim next year.
