Saxony: Left MP Nagel sentenced to a fine

Borna (dpa/sn) - The Left MP Juliane Nagel was sentenced to a fine on Thursday by the Borna district court for trespassing. The politician had to pay a fine of 15 daily rates of 150 euros each, said the court spokesman, Frank Pätzold. The judgment is not final.

At the end of November 2019, Nagel took part in protests by the "Ende Gelände" alliance in the "Vereinigtes Schleenhain" opencast mine. The Mitteldeutsche Braunkohle AG (Mibrag) then filed a criminal complaint for trespassing. At the beginning of July, the state parliament committee voted to lift Nagel's immunity. The company had also filed a criminal complaint against the deputy leader of the left-wing faction Marco Böhme, who also has to answer in court.

After the verdict, Nagel said on Twitter that she had appealed. "I'm quite surprised by this, because during the course of the negotiations we proved that the opencast mine site is not fenced in, as stipulated by the penal code," she said when asked by the German Press Agency. It is questionable why Mibrag is filing criminal charges in such cases at all. This is an attempt to put people in the legal pillory.
