Saxony: Leipzig Graduate School celebrates 30 years of re-establishment

Leipzig (dpa/sn) - With a ceremony and more than 400 guests, the Leipzig Graduate School of Management (HHL) celebrated the 30th anniversary of its re-establishment on Saturday. The school, founded in 1898 by Leipzig merchants, was considered the first German business school at the time. It was re-established in 1992 on the initiative of the Leipzig Chamber of Commerce and Industry and personalities such as the then Prime Minister of Saxony, Kurt Biedenkopf (CDU). The university is now well connected internationally and works with over 140 partner universities.

The Saxon Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer (CDU) described the business school as a "very special institution" and as a "diamond that has been continuously polished over the years". As a private university, it is an important player in the broad-based science and university state of Saxony. "With its profile, the business school complements the offers of the state universities and at the same time makes a special contribution to knowledge transfer and start-up activities in Bavaria and throughout Germany through close networking with practice."

According to Kretschmer, Germany must continue to focus on excellence and internationality in the future. "This is the life insurance for the Federal Republic of Germany." It is important these days to talk about how Germany can keep its prosperity. That's why we have to talk about what energy can cost in the Federal Republic. There is no contradiction between campaigning for climate protection on the one hand and an energy supply with internationally competitive prices on the other.

According to the business school, more than 100 alumni from all over the world traveled to the anniversary to celebrate and exchange experiences at the annual graduate meeting. "Contact with our alumni means a lot to us, because that's how we experience which professional careers develop and which values we pass on," explained Rector Stephan Stubner. In addition, the exchange of graduates with subsequent years of study is of great value in the further development of offers and new topics.

The Leipzig Graduate School of Management - also HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management - is a university with the right to award doctorates and habilitation. Over 800 students from 75 countries are currently enrolled here. In 2021, the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft recognized HHL as the leading start-up university in Germany for the fifth time in a row. In the past three decades, more than 400 start-ups have emerged from it. About a fifth of all master's graduates in business administration in Saxony are trained here.
