Bobritzsch-Hilbersdorf (dpa/sn) - As a new mega battery for the power grid, used batteries from electric vehicles in Bobritzsch-Hilbersdorf (Middle Saxony district) are given a second life. The power storage consists of more than 10,000 battery modules that were previously used in electric forklifts, for example. If there is an oversupply in the grid, electricity will be stored there in the future and fed back in later when required.
"Especially in view of the current energy shortage, we need efficient ways to store regenerative energy," said the managing director of JT Energy Systems, Reinhild Kühne, at the start on Friday. The 25-megawatt storage system helps to stabilize the electricity grid and energy prices. No information was given on the investment amount.
The company was founded in 2019 and claims to have around 110 employees. It produces energy systems for electric vehicles. This also includes the repair and processing of used lithium-ion batteries. These can often be used longer than the vehicles in which they are installed, explained Kühne. Stationary energy storage is one way of using it sensibly. Due to the increasing number of electric vehicles, more battery capacity can be expected in the coming years, which could be given a second life in stationary storage.
