Saxony: Mild weather favors planting: Pillnitz camellia blooms

Dresden (dpa/sn) - The mild temperatures have pushed the annual spring planting in the gardens and parks of Schloesserland Sachsen. In the past few days, the large decorative beds around the Palais in the Great Garden have been planted with a total of 13,500 horned violets over an area of almost 500 square meters, the state-owned company announced on Monday. The planting in other gardens such as Pillnitz, Großsedlitz or in the Dresden Zwinger will follow in the coming weeks.

Since last Saturday, the camellia house in the Pillnitz Castle Park - the glass winter quarters for the more than 250-year-old camellia - has been open to visitors again. Every day from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. the guests could see the first crimson buds up close on the circular route through the dwelling, it said. But it still needs a few more rays of sunshine and rising temperatures to get the flowering going. When it gets permanently warmer, the camellia gets "freedom" again - then the glass house is pushed aside on a rail.

In the first half of March, the Palais in the Great Garden invites you to the spring flower show with more than 40,000 flowering plants. Gardeners and florists want to design artistic room pictures with flowers, inspired by paintings from different epochs, under the motto "As painted - blossoms with an artist's hand". The exhibition is open from 3 to 12 March daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
