Dresden (dpa/sn) - By the end of January, the Saxon tax offices had received 30,317 objections to the assessment notices for the new property tax. This was the result of a response from the Ministry of Finance published on Friday to a request from AfD MP Norbert Mayer. By January 31, around 1.4 million property tax returns had been submitted, which corresponds to a rate of 75 percent.
Mayer criticized the new property tax as "a brazen rip-off for citizens" that makes living even more expensive. "Everyone now has to suffer from this, because the property tax is included in the ancillary rental costs." In addition, the Saxon government brought a "bureaucracy monster" into the world. The AfD reiterated its demand that no fines should initially be imposed.
In Saxony, the tax offices have to re-evaluate around two million properties and plots of land and issue notifications. The exact amount of property tax depends on so-called assessment rates, which are set by the municipalities. The new property tax will be due from January 1, 2025.
