Saxony: More witnesses in the Dresden jewel theft trial

After the summer break, the process of breaking into the Green Vault in Dresden picked up speed again. The district court has summoned further witnesses and hopes to gain knowledge.

Dresden (dpa / sn) - In the process of stealing jewels from the treasury of the Green Vault, further witnesses were invited on Tuesday. First, a civil engineer is to make statements about fire protection in a Dresden underground car park. There, the perpetrators had set fire to a car after the burglary to cover tracks. A man who was imprisoned with one of the accused for a time is then invited. However, he could not be found in previous summonses and therefore did not appear in court. Finally, a police officer is to take the witness stand who had evaluated data from a suspect's mobile phone.

In the trial, six young men between the ages of 23 and 28 are charged with aggravated gang theft, arson and particularly aggravated arson. The accused are Germans and come from a well-known Berlin extended family of Arabic origin. In the early morning of November 25, 2019, they are said to have stolen 21 pieces of jewelery with a total of 4,300 diamonds and brilliants with a total value of over 113 million euros from the treasury of the Green Vault and left property damage of over one million euros. So far there is no trace of the loot. The burglary made international headlines.
