Saxony: New Star of David for Kulturforum Synagogue Görlitz

Görlitz (dpa/sn) - 14 months after its reopening as a cultural forum, the Görlitz synagogue is getting a Star of David. The religious symbol, weighing 600 kilograms, will be lifted by crane onto the dome of the reconstructed building on September 12, the city administration announced on Monday. The city council had decided to rebuild it almost two years ago. The community members in particular donated for the financing, a total of around 81,000 euros were collected.

The Görlitz synagogue was the only Jewish place of worship in Saxony that withstood the arson attack by the National Socialists on the pogrom night of 1938 because firefighters put out the flames in the Art Nouveau building. The Star of David was removed the next day. After the war the church fell into disrepair and was forgotten. In July 2021 it was reopened as a cultural forum. Their renovation cost around 12.6 million euros, the federal government contributed 2.8 million euros.
