Saxony: Police keep right and left demonstrators apart

Leipzig (dpa / sn) - During the right-wing and left-wing demonstrations in Leipzig, a large number of police forces kept the political camps largely separate. No major incidents were initially known on Monday evening. However, a train with supporters of the right-wing extremist splinter party Freie Sachsen was stopped on the Leipziger Ring by a blockade by counter-demonstrators and prompted to turn back.

dpa reporters on site observed how police officers immediately stopped possible attacks by demonstrators dressed in black. The officials also blocked some of the right-wing demonstrators. The atmosphere was partly aggressive. Police officers were insulted as "traitors of the people". Car and tram traffic in downtown Leipzig was severely affected.

Right-wing and left-wing groups had registered a total of seven meetings in Leipzig for Monday evening against the federal government's energy and social policies. They demonstrated separately. Thousands of people attended.
