Dresden (dpa/sn) - On the anniversary of the Russian attack on Ukraine, the city of Dresden sent a sign of solidarity with Ukraine. "Our personal sympathy and our active solidarity belong to the people in and from Ukraine," said Dresden Mayor Dirk Hilbert (FDP) on Friday at a rally on Dresden's Neumarkt. Hilbert thanked all those who showed solidarity with the Ukrainians and provided help.
Hundreds of people gathered at Dresden's Neumarkt on Friday afternoon to commemorate the victims of the war in Ukraine. Around 9,000 Ukrainians now live in Dresden. "They suffer from uncertainty, hoping for peace that will come who knows when," says Hilbert. However, the people of Dresden do a very good job of integration. The city also got involved locally in Ukraine by sending buses to Bucha and technical equipment to Lviv. In addition, Dresden, together with Stuttgart and Strasbourg, is striving for a solidarity partnership with the western Ukrainian city of Khmelnytskyi.
"It's not in our power to end the war in Ukraine. But there's nothing we want more than for the madness to end," stressed the FDP politician. From his contacts with many citizens, he has noticed that the population is still willing to provide support in the face of flight, expulsion, suffering and destruction. "We stand firmly with Ukraine."
