Saxony: Parliamentary groups for more efficiency in political education

Dresden (dpa/sn) - The majority of the parliamentary groups in the state parliament would like political education to be more efficient. "In view of the increasingly complex issues, what is needed above all is more practical, true-to-life education in our schools," explained SPD education expert Sabine Friedel. "In concrete terms, this means that what is relevant to life must become relevant to the curriculum: health, business, communication, responsibility, politics - all of this needs more attention. What use is it in life if you memorize the binomial formulas or the course of the 30-year war Has?"

The Greens and the Left spoke out in favor of expanded offers. More political education is needed - but not as one school subject among many, but as a teaching and school principle," said Christin Melcher (Greens). Schools should not only convey democracy in theory, but should also be democratic institutions themselves. Political education can only succeed Luise Neuhaus-Wartenberg (Left Party) emphasized that if it starts with the social reality and the concrete reality of life of young people, it needs more space and time than before.

According to CDU right-wing politician Martin Modschiedler, dialogue is needed more than ever in view of increasing social polarization. "We need offers and formats in which politics, society and experts can talk to each other." The AfD keeps political education best in a balanced social studies class. "There is no need for extracurricular associations that use taxpayers' money to ideologically instill the right attitude in our children by means of increasing civics 2.0."
