Patxi Salinas is a classic of Spanish football. He was born in Bilbao 59 years ago and has been part of the Athletic Club youth system since he was 10 years old. He made his first-team debut in 1982, although he didn't make the squad until 1984.
Defending the shield of the lions, he won two leagues (1982-83, 1983-84), a Copa del Rey (1984) and a Spanish Super Cup (awarded directly by winning the double). With Athletic, the little brother of the legendary striker Julio Salinas played 239 games and was called up by the Spanish team on two occasions. Before, with the under-21 team, he won the Euro Cup in 1986.
Considered an expeditious central defender, he was a key player in the defense of the Bilbao team until 1992, when he left for Celta at the age of 29 after being discarded by coach Jupp Heynckes. In Vigo, he stayed for six seasons, until his retirement as a player in 1998, wearing the shirt in 193 games. In total, Salinas accumulated 432 games in the First Division.
After hanging up his boots, Patxi Salinas began his career as a coach, becoming a globetrotter on the bench ever since. Without leaving Vigo, he began directing the Celta youth team in the honorary division in the 1999-00 season and later achieved promotion to the Third Division with Porriño Industrial. The Unión Deportiva Atlético Gramenet (Second B), the Juvenil B of Athletic Club or CD Ourense were other of his first destinations.
In 2012, Salinas left Spain to take the reins of Maltese club Melita FC, although he was unable to prevent the team's relegation. After that brief adventure, he returned to lead clubs such as Unió Esportiva Sant Andreu, Rápido de Bouzas (achieving promotion to Second B), Burgos CF or CD Badajoz.
More recently, in 2022, he signed as coach of Portugalete (Third Federation), although he resigned from the position only a few months later. Last season he served as assistant manager for Pafos in Cyprus, along with Michel Salgado.
