Tenby: A huge shark surprises a sailor on a dinghy trip

After spotting what appeared to be a huge shark in the waters off West Wales, a sailor was in for quite a surprise.

Alex Brace from Pembrokeshire was on a routine dinghy ride off Tenby when he noticed two fins sticking out of the water.

He believed the animal to be a basking shark 12ft (3.6m) in length. They can reach heights of 10m (33ft).

"I thought, what is this?" The bike mechanic replied.

"We were loading the boat on the trailer, and then it suddenly appeared in front of our eyes."

Brace frequently sees porpoises, but he said that the size of these sightings was "rare".

He stated that the fins were about five to six feet apart. It could have measured 12ft in length or been even longer.

"We have spoken with people and they have seen the video. They believe it was probably a basking Shark.

"They usually live in deeper waters, so it is rare for them to be found in shallower water.

They can be viewed online and grown really large.

According to National Geographic, the basking Shark is the second-largest fish in the world. However, they are completely harmless to humans.

The gentle giant of the ocean has been known to travel from the north Atlantic to the Pembrokeshire coast at times.
