Thuringia: breach of trust charges against former student council member

Jena (dpa/th) - The public prosecutor's office in Gera has brought charges of suspicion of infidelity against a former employee of the student council of the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena. As the public prosecutor announced on Wednesday on request, the 30-year-old is charged with 55 cases of infidelity with a total damage of around 38,600 euros. The trial at the district court in Jena is scheduled to begin on August 31. The MDR previously reported.

According to the public prosecutor's office, the accused himself reported the crime as a witness and representative of the student body. According to the public prosecutor's office, in the course of initial investigations it turned out that he himself made the transfers to several accounts between February 2020 and December 2021 and used the money privately. The man who confessed has now returned a little less than half the money, around 16,000 euros. A repayment of the remaining money is still pending.

The student council is pleased that the indictment is now "continuing," said a spokesman on request. According to their own statements, employees in the student council’s finance department noticed a discrepancy in a double transfer in a very short period of time in mid-December 2021. In January, after internal examinations, the extent of the case became clear and a complaint was filed. The finance department manages the money of the student body.

Infidelity is classified similarly to cheating. Anyone convicted of breach of trust must expect at least a fine up to a prison sentence of up to five years.
