Thuringia: DGB demands the introduction of energy price caps

Erfurt (dpa/th) - The DGB Hessen-Thüringen demands the introduction of an energy price cap. This should provide every household with a basic need for electricity and gas at a guaranteed price, explained Michael Rudolph, chairman of the DGB Hessen-Thuringia, on Wednesday. In particular, people with low incomes should be better protected against the exploding price development in the energy supply.

People with less cash in their pockets would feel the double and triple of the rising prices, Rudolph said. Nobody should be left out of inflation. "While the long-term unemployed are largely protected from rising energy prices by legal regulations, low-income or part-time workers do not have this protection," the trade unionist pointed out.

In addition, not all low-wage employees top up their income with benefits from the social welfare office or the job center. For many, shame prevails. "These people will not be able to cushion the expected price increases." An energy price cap gives them planning security.
