Thuringia: Expansion of fast cell phone network in Thuringia is progressing

Erfurt (dpa/th) - According to their own statements, the mobile phone network operators are also making progress with the expansion in Thuringia. Vodafone now supplies 98 percent of households in Thuringia with a mobile phone network with 100 megabits per second, as the mobile phone company announced. Vodafone thus fulfills one of the conditions that it, like other companies, entered into at the 2019 frequency auction.

Since the beginning of the year, the group has built 27 new LTE stations nationwide and installed LTE technology at twelve existing stations, Vodafone announced. This closed 39 dead spots.

Telekom also announced that it had pushed ahead with the expansion in the past few months. In the Saale-Ole district, for example, seven locations with LTE and one with 5G have been expanded within the past two months. This means that Telekom now operates 51 locations in the Saale-Orla district, and household coverage is around 97 percent. According to the company, 27 locations are to be added by 2024.

The 2019 requirements state that each of the three network operators Vodafone, Telefónica (O2) and Deutsche Telekom must achieve the 98 percent target in each federal state by the end of December. The three companies recently reported completion of this goal. To meet the 98 percent coverage, the network operators rely on the 4G/LTE radio standard. Separately, they are expanding their network of the 5th generation of mobile communications (5G), which enables even faster transmission of large amounts of data.
