Sömmerda (dpa/th) - Thuringia's controversial FDP state leader Thomas Kemmerich also wants to lead the Liberals into the next state election year of 2024. The 57-year-old will run again for the party chairmanship at a party conference on Saturday (10 a.m.) in Sömmerda. An FDP spokesman said on request that there was no opposing candidate. Kemmerich has been at the head of the state FDP for several years. In 2020, he caused a government crisis in Thuringia when he was elected short-term prime minister, in which AfD votes were decisive.
In his last election, he had an opponent and was confirmed as head of state with 71.0 percent of the votes. Last year, Kemmerich had already signaled that he could also imagine being the top candidate in the next regular state election in two years. He is also spokesman for the FDP group in the state parliament. At the party conference in Sömmerda, the entire state executive is re-elected.
