Thuringia: Land buys new weapons for the police for 7.4 million euros

Erfurt (dpa/th) - Thuringian police officers are being equipped with new weapons. The interior ministry announced on Thursday in Erfurt that the procurement procedure for the procurement of new medium-range weapons had been successfully completed. In the future, the Thuringian police will receive weapons from the Belgian manufacturer FN Herstal. The approximately 1,200 operational and training weapons will replace the German-made MP5 submachine gun, it said.

The new weapon system is more accurate and can also be fired over longer distances. According to the ministry, 7.4 million euros will be spent on operational weapons and training systems. Procurement is divided between the 2023 and 2024 budget years. The first delivery is planned for next year.

The medium-range weapons are primarily intended for life-threatening situations. During such operations, one or more perpetrators are in acute danger to the lives of the people on site.
