Erfurt (dpa/th) - Michel Hopp from Erfurter TC Rot-Weiß just missed out on winning the Erfurt Trophy in tennis on Sunday. The six-time Thuringian state champion, who serves in the Eastern League for TC Ruhla 92, was only beaten in the final by Maximilian Özcelik from TC Wanne-Eickel 3:6, 2:6.

In the semifinals, the 23-year-old from Erfurt defeated his Ruhlar team-mate Jonathan Roth 6-2, 6-0. Özcelek made it into the final with a 6:3, 6:7, 7:5 win over Piet Steveker from Wuppertal.

In the women's category, Franziska Sziedat from Rot-Weiss Potsdam, number 43 in the German rankings, won. In the final, the woman from Potsdam prevailed against Anica Stabel from LTTC Rot-Weiß Berlin 7:6, 6:1. Sziedat had defeated the Thuringian state champion Stella Wiesemann 6:2, 6:4 in the semifinals. Stabel surprisingly won 7:5, 6:1 against tournament favorite Emily Welker (Leverkusen), who was seeded first.
