Thuringia: Parents: Do not pass on increases in school meals to families

Erfurt (dpa/th) - According to observations by the state parents' association, the prices for school meals are increasing at schools in Thuringia. Complaints from parents about this come mainly from Gera, Jena and the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district, said the spokeswoman for the representation, Claudia Koch, on Monday on request. "But this is a widespread phenomenon." Food providers are trying to pass on the cost increases that are affecting them to parents. In view of the high inflation and the higher burdens for families that are already being recorded, the parents' association is demanding that meal prices be frozen at the September level.

"It's all culminating in the families at the moment," said Koch. The representation called on the country to step in and support the food providers. In Thuringia, the school authorities are responsible for school meals, i.e. mostly the municipalities. According to parents' representatives, the prices to be paid by parents vary depending on the provider and region. Some municipalities paid a subsidy per meal, others did not. At the schools in Thuringia, classes will start again on Tuesday after the autumn holidays and Reformation Day.
