Thuringia: Significantly more abortions in the second quarter in Thuringia

Erfurt (dpa/th) - The number of abortions in Thuringia increased at an above-average rate in the second calendar quarter. According to a statement on Tuesday, the State Statistical Office registered 775 abortions in April, May and June - 15.7 percent more than in the same period last year. Throughout Germany, there was also an increase in abortions in the same period, but at 11.5 percent it was not as high as in Thuringia.

According to the State Office, women between the ages of 30 and 40 most frequently terminated a pregnancy, with 47 percent of abortions being carried out in this age group. Almost 40 percent were in the 18 to 30 age group. Two thirds of the women who decided to have an abortion were single at the time.

In 2021 as a whole, the number of abortions in the Free State fell by almost six percent, and fewer abortions were recorded across Germany last year than a year earlier. The statisticians did not provide any information on the causes of the current increase.
