Thuringia: State sees family resort as a driving force for tourism

Erfurt/Oberhof (dpa/th) - The Ministry of Economic Affairs expects a new family resort in the luxury segment in Oberhof to have positive effects on tourism in Thuringia. The new hotel, which officially opened on Thursday, would open up new target groups. It could thus take on the role of a draft horse, said Economics Minister Wolfgang Tiefensee (SPD).

The family hotel "The Grand Green" in Thuringia's most important winter sports resort offers 105 suites and eleven luxury chalets. It was built by a private investor for around 70 million euros. It only accommodates families with children.

According to the ministry, the project was funded by the state with around 14 million euros. "The project is a key tourism investment that will give new impetus and hopefully attract further follow-up investments to Thuringia," Tiefensee said in justifying the funding. The South Thuringia Chamber of Commerce and Industry spoke of an important investment in the Thuringian Forest with "beacon character for the entire region".
