Thuringia: State Women's Council wants contact points for victims of hate

Weimar (dpa/th) - Thuringia's state women's council has called for more support for victims of hostility and hatred on the Internet. Contact points for those affected must be expanded, and there is also a need for improved criminal prosecution, the State Women's Council said after its delegates' meeting in Weimar on Saturday. Women, people with disabilities, queer people and people with a migration background are particularly affected by hate online. Victims often don't know where to turn.

In addition to more counseling services for those affected, the organization believes that more training and sensitization of the police and the establishment of a special public prosecutor's office are necessary.

The anchoring of voluntary work in the Thuringian constitution was also required. Federal states such as Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg and Hesse have already anchored voluntary work as a national goal. This has been discussed in state politics for a long time.

In Thuringia there are around 850,000 people who are volunteers in social, cultural and political areas. "For the cohesion of our society, we need the promotion of volunteer structures and thus the promotion of clubs, associations, initiatives and organizations," said the state women's council.

Julia Hohmann was elected by the Paritätischer Wohlfahrtsverband as its new chairwoman. She has been a member of the board for more than ten years.
