Thuringia: Thuringian Greens elect new party leader

Walldorf (dpa/th) - Thuringia's Greens want to elect a new party leader at a state delegate conference in Walldorf near Meiningen today. A candidate for the office is still the 44-year-old Bundeswehr Captain Matthias Kaiser from Gotha, said a party spokesman. In addition, according to his own statements, the student and organic beekeeper Max Reschke from the Weimarer Land wants to apply for the office. Other candidates could spontaneously come forward before the election on Saturday afternoon.

A successor is being sought for the previous party leader Bernhard Stengele, who has headed the Thuringia Ministry of Energy and the Environment since the beginning of February.

Stengele took over the ministry from Anja Siegesmund, who had resigned for personal reasons. At the delegates' conference, the Greens want to stake out their positions in the areas of environment, energy and nature conservation as well as migration and justice, for which they are responsible in the red-red-green state government. A heated debate on the party's stance on arms sales to war zones is also expected. The guest of the Thuringian Greens is the political federal director Emily Büning.
