Thuringia: TLV: Support for Ukrainian teachers needed

Erfurt (dpa/th) - The Thuringian Teachers' Association (TLV) insists on staff from other disciplines to support Ukrainian teachers at schools in the Free State. The association called for multi-professional teams made up of social workers, interpreters and school psychologists, for example. It is correct that the Ministry of Education uses refugee Ukrainian teachers in schools. "We need their special skills when dealing with refugee children and young people," says the TLV. They are well trained in education. However, they were not technically prepared for other problems, the association pointed out.

According to the TLV assessment, this includes dealing with psychological injuries, "quite apart from their own condition after what they experienced," as it said in a statement from the association. They are also not technically prepared for possible conflicts between Russian-born and Ukrainian children and young people. According to the TLV, when faced with the challenges posed by the extreme shortage of staff in the schools, Ukrainian teaching staff face the same problems as all other teachers, in addition to their own war-related burdens.

According to the Ministry of Education, the five state school authorities in Thuringia have currently advertised 58 positions specifically for Ukrainian teachers. Before the summer holidays, 15 Ukrainian teachers had been hired. The setting of another 27 in the school service is still being examined.
