Thuringia: Weimar now turns on street lights later

Drastic increases in energy costs are also forcing local authorities to make savings. City lighting also plays a large part in this.

Weimar (dpa/th) - In Weimar, the street lamps will be switched on half an hour later than usual from Wednesday. So far, the switch-on time was based on the sunset, as the city announced. This is expected on Wednesday at around 9:20 p.m. According to the new regulation, the street lamps will only be switched on at around 9:50 p.m. Since the lighting is also switched off half an hour before sunrise and thus 30 minutes earlier, the municipality saves energy for an hour.

According to the city, the regulation should apply until the end of summer time. In the winter months from October to March, the original lighting is then reduced by ten minutes each time. Weimar expects savings of 70,000 to 100,000 kilowatt hours per year from this measure, which should amount to around 30,000 to 40,000 euros at the current energy price.
