An accident at an explosives and rocket factory has left five workers dead in Ankara. The authorities have reported that an explosion caused by a chemical reaction caused the tragedy in the Turkish capital.
"An explosion has occurred at the MKE rocket and explosives factory in the Elmadag district of Ankara. As a result of the explosion, five of our workers have been killed in the line of duty. A judicial and administrative investigation has been launched," it reported. the Ministry of Defense in a statement.
The governor of Ankara, Vasip Sahin, confirmed shortly after to the media that the rescue teams had already reached the place and that there were no more injuries, reports the Cumhuriyet daily. "The explosion took place at 8:45 a.m. (5:45 GMT) in a section where dynamite sticks are prepared and, as far as is known, it was caused by a chemical reaction. Five workers have lost their lives," Sahin said.
Several crews of firefighters and ambulances have traveled to the factory, which produces for both the Ministries of Defense and the Interior. The Ankara Prosecutor's Office also issued a statement, noting that it is investigating the incident.
The affected factory depends on the public company MKE (acronym in Turkish for Machinery and Chemicals Corporation), founded in 1950 and dependent since 2000 on the Turkish Ministry of Defense.
