Ukraine: Russian bombardment leaves one dead and 34 injured in the South

One person was killed and 34 injured in the night from Sunday to Monday by Russian shelling in the Ukrainian region of Kherson (south), the local military administration reported on Monday. Moscow fired new rounds of missiles in the early hours of Monday at Ukrainian towns, which Kiev forces say they mostly neutralized.

"The Russian army targeted residential neighborhoods in populated areas of the region, and an official building in the center of Kherson," local military administration chief Oleksandr Prokudin said on Telegram, who clarified that the city was bombed eight times in 24 hours.

In the Dnipropetrovsk region (East), a Russian missile attack left at least 34 injured, including three children, said Monday on Telegram Serhiy Lysak, an official of the regional administration. In the city of Pavlohrad, "19 multi-storey buildings, 25 private houses, six schools and preschools, as well as 5 shops were damaged", he said in particular.

During the night from Sunday to Monday, around 2:30 a.m. local time, Russian forces carried out a massive attack on the country, reported the commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian army, Valery Zaluzhny. "The Russian invaders attacked Ukraine with their strategic aircraft" which fired "18 cruise missiles". But 15 were destroyed by the Ukrainian army, the senior military official said on Telegram.

The Russian Defense Ministry, for its part, said it had carried out long-range precision strikes on Ukrainian ammunition production facilities. "All assigned facilities have been impacted," he continued in a statement.

Over the winter, Ukraine beefed up its anti-aircraft defences, including with US Patriot systems, after appealing to its Western allies for help in preventing its energy grid from being bombed.

Russia still controls part of the Kherson region after withdrawing from the eponymous city in November. Most of the fighting in Ukraine in recent weeks has focused on the eastern Donbass region, particularly the city of Bakhmout. The Russians have very gradually advanced in this largely destroyed industrial city, which they claim to control to the tune of about 80%.
