United States: eye drops kill several people

Eye drops caused the death of three patients and the loss of vision of eight others. It is a health drama that has affected the United States for several weeks. US health authorities have recommended healthcare professionals and patients to stop using artificial drops from the EzriCare and Delsam Pharma brands, reports TF1 Info.

Three people died after using eye drops of ten different brands and eight people lost their sight as a result of contamination, and four of them had to have their eyeballs partially or completely removed. The drops at the origin of this infection were contaminated, for a still unknown reason, by a bacterium: the pyocyanic bacillus. This rare bacterium causes eye secretions of many colors. Blurred vision and hypersensitivity to light are among the symptoms. Anyone who has used these products and has symptoms should seek medical attention as soon as possible, health authorities said.

The two companies suspected of being the source of these contaminations belong to the Global Pharma group. The eye drops in question are manufactured in India and then imported into the United States. A victim who lost an eye after contracting a severe form of the infection has filed a complaint against the group. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has advocated the removal of rays from potentially contaminated artificial tears, a guideline followed by EzriCare.
