United States: seven people killed in front of a center welcoming migrants

Seven people died and several others were injured on Sunday morning in Texas when a vehicle rammed them outside a migrant center, police said. The car "ran over several people who were waiting at a bus stop," Brownsville police spokesman Martin Sandoval told a local television station.

Seven people were killed, the driver of the vehicle was arrested and is receiving treatment, he added. He will be prosecuted for dangerous driving but he could be targeted by other charges during the day, according to Martin Sandoval. The investigation will determine if it was an accident or a deliberate act, said the official.

According to testimonies, it seems "the car has lost control. Now whether it was an accident or was it intentional is still under investigation,” he said. The news comes as authorities prepare for the lifting on Thursday of a health measure allowing the immediate deportation of migrants, "Title 42". Its expiration makes the authorities fear a spike in illegal entries into the United States. The homeless center in front of which the event took place is currently receiving migrants due to "the current influx", according to Martin Sandoval.
