A skyscraper under construction in the semi-autonomous region of Hong Kong caught fire early Friday in a commercial district of the economic city.

The bamboo scaffolding of the building, located in the Tsim Sha Tsui district, was engulfed in flames around 00:35 local time (16:35 GMT on Thursday), according to the Hong Kong newspaper South China Morning Post.

The fire caused objects to fall onto the street and injured two drivers, who were immediately taken to hospitals.

In addition, it forced the evacuation of more than 100 people from residential buildings, shopping centers and hotels such as the Sheraton, located in the surrounding area.

The government announced that the fire was largely extinguished at 08:30 local time (00:30 GMT).

Police reported that six adjacent buildings, including the three where the evacuation took place, were also affected by the flames, but were quickly put out.

The work is a remodeling of the old Mariners Club, whose completion was scheduled for last year, but the pandemic delayed the deadlines.

The club, for sailors from the city and visitors, opened its doors in 1967 and was demolished in 2018.

Hong Kong has been hit by a series of large fires in urban areas in recent months.

Last January there was a fire in an industrial building in the San Po Kong district and it took firefighters almost 10 hours to control it.
