Indonesian rescue teams are looking for 42 missing people on Tuesday after a landslide occurred on Monday due to heavy rains that devastated the small and remote island of Serasan, in the west of the country, causing at least 10 deaths, according to reports emergency services.

In a statement, the National Agency for Disaster Management (BNPB, in its Indonesian acronym) said that, in the last few hours, eight people have been rescued -reducing the number of missing from 50 the day before to 42 today-, from of which four are seriously injured and four are in critical condition.

Likewise, a total of 1,216 people have been evacuated from the affected areas, while rescue efforts are hampered by bad weather, after almost a week of uninterrupted rain, and logistical problems on this island, located in the Riau archipelago.

In photos shared by the BNPB, uprooted trees and house roofs can be seen lying in the mud at the site of the landslide.

Floods and landslides affect Indonesia every year during the rainy season, which is at its peak between December and February.
