At least three people were injured Monday, one seriously, in a knife attack at a Brussels metro station, Belgian police said. The assault took place in the neighborhood that houses the European institutions and the armed forces arrested the attacker.

The reasons for the assault are not yet known. According to a source close to the case, the attacker was known for "psychiatric records."

According to an AFP journalist present at the scene, several plainclothes police officers arrived at the station platform, located a few meters from the headquarters of the European Commission [the executive arm of the European Union] and the European Council [made up of the twenty-seven Heads of State or Government of the member countries].

At the same time, a woman urged passengers entering the station to back down, reporting the presence inside of a person armed with a knife.

Traffic remained disrupted in the early afternoon on part of the two metro lines that pass through Schuman station, while police continued their investigation at the scene, according to the Brussels transport operator (Stib).
