A teacher died this morning in the town of San Juan de Luz, in the French Basque Country, after being stabbed by a student at the school where she worked, as confirmed by the Prosecutor's Office.

The event occurred at the Santo Tomás de Aquino school, a Catholic center in the town. The gendarmes have proceeded to question the student and the center has been closed. At first the students have been forced to remain in their classes and then they have been progressively evacuated.

According to the newspaper Le Figaro, the event occurred at 10 in the morning, when the 16-year-old student entered the class and attacked the 50-year-old teacher while she was teaching a Spanish class.

As a witness explained to the aforementioned newspaper, the attacker said he had heard voices telling him that he had to stab her. The BFMTV chain ensures that the minor has psychiatric problems.

Another witness told the local France Bleu Pays Basque newspaper that the attacker had a knife hidden in a piece of paper and that when he stabbed the teacher, the rest of the students ran out of the class.

The Minister of Education, Pap Ndiaye, goes to the town in the French Basque Country to find out what has happened. The government spokesman, Olivier Veran, expressed his condolences during the press conference after the council of ministers.

"I can't even imagine the trauma that this can represent," he said. The event has shaken the residents of the town of San Juan de Luz, a quiet and very touristy destination in summer.
