Legislation What types of motorcycle license are there and how much do they cost?

When driving a two-wheeled vehicle, you must take into account the requirements to obtain the corresponding driving license.

In Spain there are currently four types of license in the categories of mopeds and motorcycles. They are regulated by means of a regulation issued by the DGT in 2009.

With this legislation, in which the current A2 card also came into force, a training and control ladder was standardized in favor of safety during the circulation of this type of vehicle through Spanish cities and highways.

On the other hand, the approval of Law 7/2021 has forced municipalities with more than 50,000 inhabitants to carry out certain mobility restrictions to lower CO2 emissions. A situation that in recent years has favored the proliferation of bikes, scooters, mopeds and also motorcycles on urban asphalt.

The four categories of moped and motorcycle driver's license are as follows:

It is used to drive two or three wheel mopeds and light quadricycles. The minimum age to obtain it is 15 years old.

In this category it is recommended to get the moped license with gears and not for automatic models. Thus the holder can drive all versions of mopeds.

To obtain this permit you must:

Average price of the AM card: 200 euros.

It allows the driving of motorcycles with a maximum displacement of 125 cm³ and a maximum power of 11 kW (just under 15 hp). The minimum age to obtain it is 16 years old.

Requirements to obtain the A1 card:

Maneuvers of the practical exam A1:

Article 5.7 of the General Regulations for Drivers also allows holders of the B license (car license) with three years of experience the possibility of driving class A1 motorcycles.

Average price of the A1 exam: 500 euros.

Allows you to drive motorcycles with a maximum power of 35 kW (just under 47 hp). The minimum age to obtain it will be 18 years old.

The requirements to drive with an A2 license are similar to A1, which includes validation of the theoretical part of B (car). You must also pass a specific theoretical part and the circuit exam and the open circulation exam.

Average price: 500 euros.

The A permit allows you to drive any two-wheeled vehicle.

It must be accessed after passing the A2, having more than 20 years and two years of experience in this type of vehicle.

Average price of the A card: 300 euros.
