Locked up on factory premises: riots at Apple supplier Foxconn

The workers at the Foxconn plant in Zhengzhou, China, have been living under strict corona measures for weeks and are not allowed to leave the premises. Videos show angry employees clashing with security forces.

According to media reports, Apple supplier Foxconn is again experiencing unrest in China over working conditions as a result of the corona measures. Videos on social media show more than a hundred people tearing down barriers at the plant in the Chinese industrial city of Zhengzhou and clashing with people in hazmat suits. They pose as Foxconn employees.

Some videos show workers complaining about the food they were given, others say they did not receive the extra payments they were promised. The authenticity of the videos could not initially be checked independently. Foxconn has so far not responded to a request for comment.

The Zhengzhou plant is responsible for 70 percent of global iPhone production and employs around 200,000 workers. Due to the Corona situation in Zhengzhou, the employees work in a so-called closed cycle - a system in which the employees live and work on site, isolated from the outside world. Foxconn is struggling with a high level of dissatisfaction among its employees because of the restrictions. Several workers fled the factory. The company promised them higher wages if they returned. Apple expects fewer deliveries of the iPhone 14 due to the production disruptions.
