A 59-year-old Australian tourist died on Sunday in New Caledonia after being attacked by a shark on the beach of Nouméa, the mayor's office of the capital of this French territory located in the South Pacific reported.

The victim was swimming near a floating pontoon about 150 meters from the beach when he received multiple bites.

The tourist was "rescued by two sailors who were nearby," Yves Dupas, the Nouméa prosecutor, told AFP.

The victim had large bite marks on his leg and arms and despite rescuers trying to revive him when he was brought to the beach, he died from his injuries.

At the time of the attack, there were a large number of people on the Château-Royal beach, which caused panic among bathers and the area was evacuated.

The mayor of the city of Nouméa, Sonia Lagarde, ordered the closure of most of the beaches and launched a campaign to capture tiger sharks and sardinian sharks.
