The Stuttgart police discovered a man with a knife in the entrance to a burning apartment. He is arrested. Two people do not survive the fire. Investigators believe the events are connected.
After a major police operation, an apartment fire and the arrest of an armed man in Stuttgart, two people died in the evening. A police spokeswoman said the woman and man died in hospital from their injuries. They had previously been rescued from a burning apartment with serious injuries. The autopsy will reveal how they died. For tactical reasons, the spokeswoman did not want to say exactly what injuries the two had.
At noon, the police arrested an armed man with a knife in front of the house where the apartment was on fire. He is said to be connected to the fire. The police initially did not give details of the suspect or the connection to the fire on Tuesday evening.
Rescue workers from the fire brigade are said to have noticed the man in the area of the entrance to the house, the police said. The fire brigade was deployed with around 30 emergency services and ten vehicles. The apartment on the top floor, which was in full fire, could be extinguished.
According to the "Bild" newspaper, the arrested person is said to be a 45-year-old Italian. The two victims were a 53-year-old woman and a 32-year-old man.
