Clinics remain burdened: RKI: Severe corona diseases are declining

Although the Covid infection pressure in the general population remains high, according to the RKI, the peak of the current wave has now also been passed for serious illnesses. According to the random sample, the omicron subline BA.5 is still almost exclusively responsible for infections.

The ebbing of the omicron wave this summer is now also reflected in the severe corona diseases. "These data consistently show that the peak of the current wave has passed, even in the case of severe illnesses," says the weekly report of the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) on Covid-19. The authors describe declining trends in the number of patients with Covid-19 in German intensive care units and in Covid-19 diagnoses.

"Despite the overall further decline in the number of cases, the infection pressure in the general population remains high in all age groups," warns the RKI. The burden on the healthcare system also remains high despite the recent improvement in the operating situation. A high number of hospital admissions, Covid 19 intensive care patients and deaths are expected to continue in the coming weeks.

A random sample of analyzed positive cases shows that the omicron subline BA.5 is still responsible for infections almost exclusively.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization presented figures that describe the difficult international situation surrounding the pandemic - especially in countries with a poor vaccination situation. According to this, more than a million people have died in connection with Covid-19 since the beginning of the year.

In view of this number, there can be no question that the world has learned to live with Corona, said WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. He pointed out that all means are actually available to prevent these deaths. Nevertheless, a third of the world's population has still not received an initial vaccination against the corona virus. Three quarters of all older people in poorer countries also have no vaccination protection.
